Why Dental Hygiene Matters

Let’s be honest—good dental hygiene isn’t just about a pretty smile. It’s about health. Clean teeth help prevent cavities, reduce gum inflammation, and even lower the risk of more serious health issues. And one of the biggest perks? Fewer dental visits. When your oral care routine actually works, you’re not just brushing for fresh breath—you’re saving money and avoiding unnecessary procedures.

But here’s where things get tricky: not all toothpaste is created equal.

Why Fluoride Might Not Be So Great

Fluoride has been marketed for decades as a must-have for fighting cavities. But the truth is, too much fluoride can be harmful—especially for kids.

Overexposure can cause dental fluorosis, which shows up as white or brown spots on the teeth. In more serious cases, fluoride overdose has been linked to abdominal pain, headaches, irregular heartbeat, and even cardiac arrest. Some research also suggests potential effects on brain development in children.

Plus, most people already get fluoride from tap water. So if you’re brushing with it too, you could be getting a lot more than your body actually needs. And for those of us looking to live a more natural, low-tox lifestyle, brushing with a chemical like fluoride every day just doesn’t sit right.

A Cleaner, Better Choice: Small Batch Coconut Toothpaste

That’s why I started making my own toothpaste—because I wanted something that worked with my body, not against it. Something effective, clean, and totally fluoride-free.

Here’s what’s inside my formula:

  • 🌴 Coconut oil – antibacterial and toxin-pulling, it helps fight plaque and supports gum health
  • 🌿 Peppermint & spearmint essential oils – for that super fresh, cooling minty finish
  • 🧂 Baking soda – gently whitens, neutralizes odor, and helps polish teeth
  • 🌾 Arrowroot powder – helps with texture and naturally absorbs bacteria and toxins

✨ Together, this formula naturally whitens, removes plaque, and loosens tartar—leaving your teeth feeling smooth and glassy-clean, without any of the harsh chemicals found in commercial brands.

A Quick Note About Coconut Oil

The only challenge with this toothpaste? Coconut oil has a low melting point, and tends to float to the top when warmed—especially in the summer. So occasionally, you may need to give it a quick stir to keep the texture just right.

This is also why I chose to package my toothpaste in a glass jar. It’s eco-friendly, easy to stir, and helps keep your product clean and stable—no squeezing, no waste.

Our Family’s Journey to Natural Toothpaste

This is now our only family toothpaste.

The switch took time. At first, we both continued to alternate with other “natural” commercial toothpaste brands. Probably because we felt like we should? But the difference was undeniable. They just couldn’t give us the benefits.
The whitening wasn’t there. The tartar control wasn’t there.

And honestly—isn’t it weird how we brush and floss like crazy for 6 months and still have to go in for tartar management and scraping and cleaning… only to do it all again?

I’ve been making toothpaste for a few years now. A while back, I went in for a cleaning, and the hygienist was pretty vocal about how white my teeth were. She actually asked me what I was using—so I told her. And at that point, I wasn’t even using it consistently. She was genuinely shocked.

Fast forward a few months ago—we both decided to drop all the other brands for good. The difference was just too clear to ignore.
The tartar completely disappeared.
That fresh, squeaky-clean tooth feeling? Unmistakable.
And we’re not going back.

Why Make the Switch?

Switching to a coconut oil, fluoride-free toothpaste isn’t just about what you’re avoiding. It’s about what you’re choosing:
✅ Cleaner ingredients
✅ Real results
✅ Peace of mind

Since I made the switch, my teeth feel cleaner, my breath stays fresher longer, and my dental checkups? So much easier. It’s proof that you don’t need synthetic additives to get a healthy, happy smile.
